Some of you may not know the remarkable story of Helen Keller. She was born in Tuscumbia, in 1880, a city in North Alabama. Tom and I have visited her beloved Ivy Green, and enjoyed learning about this determined woman.

At 19 months she became very ill and lost the ability to see, hear and speak, but God blessed her with a very smart brain and a very big heart. Her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who became her best friend, was able to get Helen to understand that the motions she pushed on to the palms of her hands meant something -- they were words.

The sign language put on her hands, of course, changed Helen's life, and she has been counted as one of the most successful and treasured women in the world today, being the very first deaf/blind/mute person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
